Your marketing communications will make or break your marketing efforts. Keep them clear and to the point. Whether writing short or long copy, keep the length of the piece appropriate to the amount of information you have to impart. Avoid exaggeration and clichés wherever possible.
We help many of our customers with their copywriting and adjust the style to match the purpose. The copy you use for your website, brochures or sales letters should carry a consistent message but there are subtle differences. Here are a few pointers:
- An old one but still just as valid: sell your benefits not your features.
- What's in it for them? Readers will get bored if they can't relate your message to themselves.
- Write as if you were talking to the person face-to-face.
- Put your most important message at the beginning, don't build up to it.
- If you're writing for an online medium (website copy, PR, articles, etc) make sure you use keywords and phrases.
- Don't get carried away with the graphics. Make it look great but make sure your message is clear and that it sells.
